How to Add a Preconfigured Kiosk to GateKeeper

Updated over 2 months ago

NOTE: This guide is intended for CrisisGo customers who have purchased preconfigured kiosk devices. If you are using your own device, please refer to How to Add Your Own Kiosk (BYOD) to GateKeeper.

1. Add to the CrisisGo GateKeeper System

Once your preconfigured devices are ready, add them to the CrisisGo GateKeeper system. Here's how:

1. Connect your devices to your network. Make sure all devices have a working network connection before proceeding.

2. Open the CrisisGo app on your device. A 6-digit CrisisGo GateKeeper Code should appear on the screen, as shown below.

3. In the CrisisGo Safety iControl, navigate to GateKeeper > Settings > Kiosk, then click "Add Kiosk".

4. When prompted, enter the 6-digit code displayed on your device and click "Next".

5. On the next page, enter the device name, select the site or building where you want to place the device, and set a maintenance passcode.

NOTE: The passcode you set here is for CrisisGo app maintenance purposes. Once your device is set up as a kiosk, the CrisisGo app will stay on the GateKeeper Welcome page. Anyone attempting to exit this page must enter the passcode. This helps prevent unauthorized or accidental actions by end users.

6. Finally, click "Save" to apply and save your settings.

After saving the settings in iControl, your device should automatically connect to the CrisisGo GateKeeper system shortly, and the Welcome page will appear on the device.

2. Lock Device to Run Only CrisisGo

WARNING: Although you have set a passcode to prevent end users from exiting the GateKeeper Welcome page in the CrisisGo app, they may still disrupt the GateKeeper workflow by force-closing the app or opening other apps on the device. To prevent this, it's important to restrict access to other apps and disable the ability to force-close CrisisGo. Follow the instructions below to keep your kiosk from being disrupted.

2.1. For Android devices

  1. (Recommended) Use the device's built-in Pin-App function to pin the CrisisGo app to the home screen. If you are using a Samsung device, see guidance here: Pin an app to your phone screen so that it can't be closed. If you are using other Android devices, please refer to the Google general guidance: Pin & unpin screens.

  2. Use third-party apps to lock the device so it runs only the CrisisGo app. To achieve this, search Google Play for third-party applications that can lock a single app on your device. Configure the selected app to allow only the CrisisGo app to run on the screen, preventing end-users from closing the app or navigating back to the system home screen.

2.2. For iOS devices

To lock the CrisisGo app on iOS devices (iPhone/iPad), we will use iOS's built-in feature called "Guided Access". Here's how:

1. Open the Settings app. Go to Accessibility, scroll down, and tap Guided Access under the General section. Then turn on Guided Access.

2. Tap Passcode Settings to set a passcode (or enable Face ID/Touch ID) to prevent end users from exiting Guided Access mode.

3. Return to the Guided Access page, locate Display Auto-Lock, and set it to Never.

4. Now go back to the home screen and open the CrisisGo app.

5. On the CrisisGo GateKeeper page, triple-click the side button (or the Home button on older iPhones) to start Guided Access for the CrisisGo app. If this is your first time using Guided Access with CrisisGo, you will see a prompt to configure its settings. Tap the Options button in the bottom-left corner and ensure the following settings are configured properly:

  • Side Button: Off

  • Volume Buttons: Off

  • Motion: On

  • Software Keyboards: On

  • Touch: On

  • Time Limit: Off

6. Then click 'Done' to save settings. Then click 'Start' or 'Resume' on the top-right corner to start Guided Access mode on CrisisGo app.

7. Now try pressing any buttons—such as the side button or volume buttons—or swiping the screen. Try any method you would typically use to force-close an app or turn off the screen. You should find that none of them work. The CrisisGo app should now be locked to the screen, with no way to exit or close it. This ensures that end users also cannot disrupt your GateKeeper workflow.

TIP: To exit Guided Access mode, triple-click the side or Home button again, enter the passcode you just set, and tap End.

3. Troubleshooting

If you have any questions during setup, we recommend referring to the GateKeeper Front Desk FAQs first. If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your CrisisGo Account Manager or CrisisGo Support.
