Using CrisisGo on Chromebooks

Updated over 2 months ago

Background

Due to support for ChromeOS Apps being phased out by Google across all operating systems by November 5, 2022, CrisisGo can no longer supports native ChromeOS Apps for our users.

To continue using CrisisGo on your Chromebook, please choose one of the following options:

  • Recommended: Install and use the CrisisGo Safety Client Chrome Extension.

  • Alternative: Install and use the CrisisGo Android app.

1. Recommended: CrisisGo Safety Client Chrome Extension

We provide a Chrome extension named 'CrisisGo Safety Client Chrome Extension'. This extension allows users to access core CrisisGo features, such as receiving alerts on their Chromebook.

NOTE: The extension requires Google Chrome version 95 or higher.

1.1. Install the Extension

  • For individual users, follow Google's official guidance to add the CrisisGo Chrome Extension. In Step 2, search for 'CrisisGo Safety Client Chrome Extension'.

  • For administrators who manage Chrome policies from the Google Admin Console, follow this Google guidance to automatically install 'CrisisGo Safety Client Chrome Extension' for your organization.

1.2. Sign In to the Extension

After installing the extension, you will see the red CrisisGo logo in the top-right corner of your Chrome browser's toolbar. Click the logo to open the extension.

Then click 'Sign In'. You will be redirected to the CrisisGo Safety Client login page. Enter your CrisisGo credentials to complete the sign-in process.

After signing in to the Safety Client, you should see your avatar and name displayed in the extension, along with a red “Sign Out” button, indicating that you are already signed in.

You can then safely close your Chrome browser—your extension is already signed in, and CrisisGo alerts will continue to be delivered through the extension even if the browser is closed.

WARNING: Due to Chromebook system security restrictions, third-party apps cannot display notifications or play custom sounds when the device is locked. In other words, even if your CrisisGo Chrome Extension receives an alert, you will not see alert prompts or hear alert sounds while the screen is locked.

Because of this limitation, if you want to use your Chromebook as a dedicated device solely for reliably receiving CrisisGo alerts, follow the instructions below.

How to Stop Your Chromebook from Locking or Sleeping

  1. Follow this Google guide to open the lock screen settings page, then turn OFF the “Lock when sleeping or lid is closed” option.

  2. Then, follow this Google guide. Under the “Put your Chromebook to sleep” section, find “Keep your Chromebook awake” and follow all the steps to ensure your Chromebook stays awake.

1.3. Upgrade the Extension

Typically, the Chrome browser will handle extension upgrades for you. Whenever an update is available, Chrome will update the extension silently when it is idle or the next time you restart your computer.

NOTE: There may be some delays before Chrome automatically updates your extension due to its update policy and schedule. If you believe an upgrade is available but Chrome has not updated it automatically, follow the previous section "1.1. Install the Extension" to uninstall the old version and then reinstall the latest one from the Chrome Web Store manually.

2. Alternative: CrisisGo Android App

In case the CrisisGo Safety Client Chrome Extension does not work for you, you can alternatively install the CrisisGo Android app on your Chromebook.

First, check whether your device supports installing Android apps and has access to the Google Play Store. Follow Google's official guidance below to verify availability:

If your Chromebook supports Android apps,
